EveryLibrary’s Medium Magazine

Many families and individuals need to be reconnected with the library. That, in part, is why we publish our Medium magazine of stories about libraries for the American public. We publish stories on Medium, a widely used public platform and our articles are not librarians or workers. In other words, we keep it simple and avoid library jargon or slang and assume no prior knowledge of library processes or procedures. The audience we write to are people who want information on how to use libraries in a new way to improve their lives.

Our writers come from diverse backgrounds and bring unique perspectives on libraries. Some are librarians, and some are "civilians" with unique library perspectives. They explore new and developing library trends, share their professional experiences, and respond to readership demand for popular topics such as how families can use libraries, reading recommendations, library lifestyle tips, health, entrepreneurship, and more.

We publish nearly 200 stories annually and our stories reach up to 1 million Americans every week. We affix a footer to the end of every story, noting that the content is free to use under a Creative Commons license with proper attribution and our stories are evergreen, meaning they work well as content for other publications to reuse, remix, and repurpose.

For example, our articles are a natural fit for parenting magazine readership. Parents seek educational and recreational activities for their children, ideally activities that promote emotional learning and literacy. We also know parents are concerned about budget constraints and access to quality resources. The library is a crucial resource for parents, fulfilling all of the parts of this equation. In the fall of 2023 our companion organization, EveryLibrary Institute, conducted a poll in partnership with Book Riot to gauge parent attitudes about libraries. The poll surveyed a large representative sample of American parents from all 50 states. The poll results, which are available on EveryLibrary Institute’s website help us understand what messages resonate with our parent readers. Most parents believe libraries are essential community resources that provide access to materials and services that people might not otherwise have. Specifically, 87% of respondents believe that libraries are vital for improving the quality of life for families. We also found that Americans value libraries for their role in promoting literacy and lifelong learning. 83% of respondents believe libraries are essential in promoting literacy. These results show that there is significant interest in library usage among American families.
